Selective Modification of Nanoscale Rods Using Gold Nanoparticles
April 9th, 2007 — From the Meridian Institute's Nanotech Dev News
Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Solid-State Research and the University of Stuttgart, both in Germany, report successfully making dumbbell-shaped nanostructures by binding gold nanoparticles to the ends of the tubular tobacco mosaic virus, a breakthrough that overcomes difficulties researchers have faced with modifying nanoscale structures in specific positions. Biological molecules such as DNA and viruses are used as templates for the synthesis and exact positioning of structured nanomaterials because they have highly symmetrical forms and uniform size distribution.
